How May A Lawyer Help You Face The Consequences & Costs Of Your DUI Case?
Interviewer: What is the estimated total cost to someone arrested for a DUI?
Aaron: If you are not convicted of the DUI and we can get your case dismissed, you are not going to have any fees outside of your attorney fees; and maybe the cost to get your car out of the lot if they towed it.
However, if you are convicted, typically there is a fine of about $1,800 to $2,000. It is give or take a few hundred dollars depending what county you are in. Some counties have higher fines than others. Napa has a higher fine. Alameda has a little lower fine. I could go through all the counties, but I am not going to do that right now.
Then a DUI school on a standard first DUI conviction is about $700. So you are looking at, give or take, about $2700 in costs. They let you make payments on all of these so it can be spread out over a long period of time.
Interviewer: Are you able, the majority of the time, to make someone’s circumstances better than if they did not have an attorney?
Aaron: More often than not I am going to give someone a better result than if they went in without an attorney. In fact, it is way more often than not. That can be just because of the timing of things. I can shorten license suspensions or save your license.
Another thing I can do is give real good advice on insurance. I can advise what steps to take to keep from getting stuck with your own insurance once they find out about your DUI. When they find out, rates go through the roof and you have to pay a lot more money.
There are all sorts of different things I can help people with; and advise them. I just practice DUI defense. I am very knowledgeable in all areas while the case is going on and after it is over. Someone who hires me is welcome to contact me after the case is over, anytime about anything. I am here to help.
Interviewer: Hiring a lawyer seems like a no-brainer. Does hiring a lawyer pay for itself considering your savings on fines, fees, jail, increased insurance, and loss of a license or a job?
Aaron: Most everybody who hires me is very glad they did hire me. If you are someone who decides not to hire a lawyer and just plead guilty, for the rest of your life you face not knowing whether hiring a very good DUI lawyer could have prevented conviction or led to reduced charges.
The defenses you were not able to figure out on your own can be investigated and used. If you get convicted of a DUI, the consequences are severe. They stick with you for the rest of your life in most cases.
Consequences of a DUI conviction include trouble getting a job, or your insurance through the roof, or trying to get into Canada and being turned away. With all these things, you are going to look back and say, “God, I wonder if I had a lawyer if it could have changed things?”
Now, there is no guarantee. No lawyer can guarantee specific results. What a very good DUI lawyer can do is work their tail off to try and get you the best results. That is my job. That is what I do in every case.
