MILPITAS – According to the California Highway Patrol, a 20-year-old Gilroy man was taken into custody on the suspicion of felony driving under the influence after fatally hitting a construction worker and injuring another alongside Interstate Highway 680 in Milpitas early this morning.
The California Highway Patrol said that Adrian Valencia Sanchez was taken into custody after the emergency personnel released him from a 2000 Nissan Altima damaged in the accident and took him to the hospital.
At 2:41 AM, the CHP was reported about an accident involving a white work truck and a silver Nissan sedan on the right shoulder of northbound Highway 680 south of Scott Creek Road. The CHP sent a specialized traffic investigation team based out of Vallejo to investigate the incident. CHP officials said that officers found that the Nissan had hit 2 construction workers and a white Ford F-350 pickup truck. Both workers injured in the accident are residents of Vacaville and had been standing near the back of the truck where they were removing a construction sign warning motorists of roadwork ahead just before the crash. Sanchez lost control of his vehicle and he left the roadway, veered onto the right shoulder and crashed into the 2 men and the truck. Both men were wearing the required safety gear and reflective clothing.
One of the workers, who was 34 years old died at the accident spot. His name and identity was not released by the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office. The other worker was a 26-year-old man, who suffered non-life threatening injuries in the accident and was taken to Regional Medical Center of San Jose. Sanchez suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash and was also taken to the hospital before he was taken into custody by the police, according to CHP.
