Driver arrested for DUI after deadly I-580 wreck in Livermore

LIVERMORE – According to California Highway Patrol, 53-year-old Primitivo Garcia has been taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter after causing a fiery four-car accident on Thursday morning in which one individual died on Interstate Highway 580.

m. just east of North Livermore Avenue. CHP Officer Steve Creel told that the accident initially blocked traffic on both sides of the highway and a Sig-alert was issued at 10:14 a.m.

After the accident, Garcia was taken to the Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley for treatment of his injuries and then he was booked into the Santa Rita Jail on felony charges.

Creel told that the accident appears to have happened when a Hummer driven by Garcia hit a Jeep Cherokee from the back.

Those 2 cars struck another 2 cars and the Jeep burst into flames. The fire spread to the Hummer but Garcia and the 20-year-old passenger travelling in his car were able to escape. Both were taken to Eden Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Emergency crews reached the Jeep and told there was at least one dead individual inside it. The identity of the person who died in the accident was not released by the authorities.

During the time period in which the investigators investigated the incident, the traffic remained blocked. Eastbound lanes were completely cleared at about 11:30 a.m. but the westbound lanes were not cleared until 2 p.m. when the Sig-alert was canceled.
