On Saturday, the Orange County Coroner’s Office identified the man who died as a result of an individual who was driving under the influence of alcohol and collided with his sedan. The motor vehicle was forced into an intersection where it caught fire.
50-year-old Steven Okamura died on Thursday in the accident that occurred on Chapman Avenue and Yorba Street.
The accident was caused by a 32-year-old woman who was accused of driving under the influence when her black Toyota Camry hit the Chevrolet Cruze which Okamura was driving. The motor vehicle was struck when it was stopped at a red light. The Toyota Camry was travelling at a high rate of speed when it hit Okamura’s car due to which it was pushed into the intersection where it caught fire.
Individuals who were present at the accident spot saw it happening and attempted to assist.
One of the witnesses said, “I tried to open the door, but it was too late. It was just really sad. We couldn’t do anything”.
Police told that the suspected driver, 32-year-old Stephanie Derosas, was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter. She also sustained injuries in the accident for which she remained hospitalized Friday afternoon.
Flowers were left at the intersection, along with a note that read, “We love you Steve. You will forever be missed”.
